MURDER IN HORYD HOUSE (CLUEDO / CLUE)

There was talk of making Cluedo games in a recent post and I mentioned that I was thinking of making a non-VBA / non-Gameshow version.

Well, over the last 3-4 days, I've put one together. It works in a similar way to the original board game version except that it's for a single player. Like the original, it's about using a process of elimination to identify who did the murderous deed, in what location, and with what weapon.

I started looking at available images of the Cluedo rooms and characters etc, but suddenly realised that I already had rooms in 'Escape from Horyd House' and characters from 'Guess Who' - so I adapted a few of these. This then led to the title of the game which continues the Horyd House franchise.

Once I'd worked out the mechanics, putting them into operation wasn't too difficult. What helped a lot was re-naming all the objects in the Selection Pane to match what they related to: 'Meg White large pic' 'Meg White small pic' 'Meg White oval' etc

It's not available for download from my website yet, and the video is not for public viewing yet, but here's the 'unlisted' preview:

Here's a screenshot of the instructions so you can see how it works.

Wow! That was a great use of the randomizer animation. I really like how the rooms of this game are the same from when we first visited Horyd House. I wonder if maybe we'll see some of these characters and/or props make appearances in your first game, or a possible sequel "Return to Horyd House?"

That was pretty good!

What I liked

  • Seeing the Horyd house rooms again
  • Interesting use of randomization without VBA
  • Five different games with the cards located in different areas
  • The silly-looking characters that made me chuckle (in a good way)

What could be improved

  • I felt like crossing out the people/locations/weapons dragged out a bit too long. I'd reduce the animation duration to at most a second. Also, the red could have stood out more, as it was slightly difficult to discern crossed out locations.

If you continue this series, I'd definitely want to learn more about each character's back story.

Thanks for the feedback Tim & Mike. Very useful. I've reduced the time that the cards are visible to two seconds. You're right, six seconds was too long. I'm ok at the moment with leaving the crossed-out locations / people etc with their current text colour as I wanted these to blend more with the background to let the remaining items stand out more.

Your comments about continuing the series and characters' back stories has also got me thinking!

I actually thought about the crossing-out animation (when the words become red). Still, reducing the card visibility time to two seconds is a good move.

Ah yes! I see what you mean about some crossing out animation. Thank you, I'll have a play.
