Wow, I'm surprised it's able to survive in such an environment! Sure, there are a lot of fish, but doesn't the former breath salt-water?

As a mammal, a seal breathes air. They have lungs like we do. Not gills. They usually live in coastal salt-water areas but are quite happy in fresh water too. This one is especially happy as it has got a substantial food supply right under its nose.

As a result of living in Japan, I now view all forms of sea life as potential dinner.

Some sad news about the Rochford seal (named Nelson by the local residents). This was reported yesterday:
"Nelson the seal has become a famous star in Rochford and is loved by many in the district, despite eating an estimated £4000 worth of fish.
It is believed the seal has died after a rescue attempt as an eye witness described the scene and said the seal failed to resurface following the use of a tranquillizer gun.
The seal has been in Hall fishery lake in Rochford Reservoir since December, 12 last year".
I suspect there will be an inquiry into how and why things went wrong.
(Btw, £4,000 is nearly $5,000 US)
Here he is with one of his last catches: a good sized bream.
